How Do Amazon Affiliate Links Work?

Members of the Amazon affiliate program are assigned a unique code.

This code is in all affiliate links used by program members so that Amazon can determine who sent visitors to their retail site.

Once the visitor gets to Amazon, cookies track purchases.

After the visitor pays, the items appear in the affiliate’s account in Ordered Items. You don’t earn a commission at this point.

Ordered items

Amazon then ships the items to the customer.

Providing the items are not returned, the affiliate earns a commission on everything purchased by that visitor.

The products appear in the affiliate’s account as shipped.

The Amazon SiteStripe generates links containing your unique affiliate code.

For example, I have written a blog post about the GoPro Hero10 camera. I want to place an affiliate link on my post.

The highlighted code is an URL link to the product page on Amazon.

The link contains your unique affiliate code, copy the code and paste it into your blog post.

You earn a commission if the visitor clicks on this link and purchases the product.

How To Use Amazon Affiliate Links?

To create an affiliate text link, highlight the text within your post.

Create link

Paste the code you got from the Amazon SiteStripe over the highlighted text.

Paste Text

Once pasted, WordPress offers the option to open the link in a new browser tab.

I recommend choosing this. Your visitor won’t lose your website when they go to Amazon.

You now have a clickable link in your blog post that takes your visitor to Amazon.

This link contains your unique Amazon affiliate code. When visitors make a purchase, you get a commission.

Amazon affiliate links work by including a unique code. The code lets Amazon know who sent the visitor to them.

Once on the retail website, Amazon assigns a cookie to the visitor to track purchases. Items purchased within 24 hours earn the affiliate a commission. The commission rate depends on the item category.

Although Amazon’s commission rates are low, they have excellent conversion rates. Amazon is a worldwide trusted brand and does a great job of converting visitors to buyers.

If you are new to affiliate marketing, Amazon is an excellent partner. The affiliate program is free to join. Adding affiliate links to your blog content or YouTube channel description is simple.

After joining the affiliate program, you have 180 days to make three qualifying sales. If you do not get the three sales, Amazon closes your account. You can reapply immediately.

Should you get the three qualifying sales, Amazon audits your website. If you fail the audit, Amazon closes your account.
