The Amazon affiliate program is free to join and is an excellent way to monetise your blog. If you are ready, let’s find out how Amazon links work and how to use them on your blog.
If you haven’t joined the Amazon affiliate program yet, please check out my ‘How To Sign Up For The Amazon Affiliate Program‘ post. My guide shows you the application process.
How Do Amazon Affiliate Links Work?
Members of the Amazon affiliate program are assigned a unique code. This code is in all affiliate links used by program members so that Amazon can determine who sent visitors to their retail site.
Once the visitor gets to Amazon, cookies track purchases. After the visitor pays, the items appear in the affiliate’s account as ordered. You don’t earn a commission at this point.
Amazon then ships the items to the customer. Providing the items are not returned, the affiliate earns a commission on everything purchased by that visitor. The products appear in the affiliate’s account as shipped.
How Do I Get An Amazon Affiliate Link?
After you sign up for the Amazon Affiliate program, you get access to the Amazon SiteStripe. When signed in, the SiteStripe appears at the top of the page on the Amazon retail website.
The Amazon SiteStripe generates links for you that contain your unique affiliate code.
Find the item or products page you want to promote on your website then, click on the ‘Text’ link on the SiteStripe.
For example, I have written a blog post about the GoPro Hero10 camera. I want to place an affiliate link on my post.
I go to the product page on Amazon and then click on the ‘Text’ link.
The highlighted code is an URL link to the product page on Amazon. The link contains your unique affiliate code, copy the code and paste it into your blog post.
If the visitor clicks on this link and purchases the product, you earn a commission.
How Do I Use Amazon Affiliate Links?
To add an Amazon affiliate link to your blog post. Decide where you want to have a link to Amazon in your blog post. You can use an image or text.
I recommend text links because they tend to convert better. To create a text link, highlight the text within your post.
Then, paste the code you got from the Amazon SiteStripe over the highlighted text.
Once pasted, WordPress offers the option to open the link in a new browser tab. I recommend doing this so that your visitor doesn’t close your website when they go to Amazon.
You now have a clickable link in your blog post that takes your visitor to Amazon. This link contains your unique Amazon affiliate code. Should the visitor make a purchase, you get paid.
How Long Do Amazon Affiliate Links Last?
The Amazon cookie assigned to the visitor using your affiliate link last for 24 hours. Should the visitor leaves Amazon without buying anything and then returns to Amazon using another affiliate’s link. You lose your cookie.
Therefore, it is essential to get your visitor in the buying mood before sending them to Amazon.
Should the visitor add items to their basket but don’t check out. Your cookie is still active. But they must purchase those items within 90 days.
How Much Do Amazon Affiliate Links Pay?
Amazon pays commissions to affiliates. How much you get paid depends on the category. This commission rate table was accurate as of 12th October 2021.
You can check out the latest commission rates here.
Some of the categories have low commission rates. Think about the items you want to promote and view the commission rates. You won’t make a lot of money promoting cheap items with just 1% to 4%.

Once a visitor clicks on your unique link to go to Amazon. Amazon tracks that visitor for 24 hours. If the visitor makes a purchase, you get paid.
Amazon affiliate links work by including a unique code. The code lets Amazon know who sent the visitor to them.
Once on the retail website, Amazon assigns a cookie to the visitor to track purchases. Items purchased within 24 hours earn the affiliate a commission. The commission rate depends on the item category.
