Beginner’s guide on how to set the homepage on WordPress

In this post, I am going to take you step by step on how to set the homepage on WordPress. You can show your latest posts or you can custom a page to be your default homepage, I will show how to do both.

When I started using WordPress, I found it frustrating trying to work out or find the settings in my WordPress dashboard. This post is to help you with an important setting, your homepage.

I will cover each step in detail accompanied by screenshots taken from my WordPress dashboard.

Let’s get started.

Quickstart instructions

If you are familiar with your WordPress dashboard, here is how you navigate to your homepage settings.

Hover your mouse over ‘Settings’ in the main menu, from the popup menu, select ‘Reading’. Here are your ‘Homepage settings’. Select ‘Latest posts’ or ‘A static page’. If you select ‘A static page’, designate a page from the drop-down menu to be your homepage and blog page. Once you have made your selection, click on ‘Save’.

The first step to setting your default homepage is to navigate to that page on your WordPress admin.

Move your mouse to ‘Settings’ on the main menu on the left, from the popup menu, select ‘Reading’. Like this.

Navigate to homepage settings

Now we have found our homepage settings. At the top of this page, there are two options, one for your latest posts and one for a static page.

Latest posts or a static page?

Latest posts option

If you want your latest content displayed on your homepage, select the ‘Your latest posts’ option. Each time you publish new content, this new post will appear at the top of your homepage. Your blog content is displayed in chronological order.

Before you save your changes, you have two more options to select. How many posts you want to be displayed on your homepage and do you want the full post displayed or a post summary.

Once you have made your selection, click on the blue ‘Save Changes’ link at the bottom of the page.

Here is my site’s homepage, I have my latest blog posts displayed.

A static page option

If you prefer to have a custom homepage, then select the ‘A static page’ option. Before you select that option, you need to create your custom homepage.

Create a custom homepage

To start, go to ‘New’ at the top of your WordPress admin dashboard, hover your mouse over ‘New’ and select ‘Page’ from the popup menu. Like this.

Create a new page

Name your new page ‘Home’ and start designing your custom homepage. Once you have completed your homepage, select ‘Publish’.

If you have blog posts on your site, you also need to create a new page for your latest blog posts. Go to ‘New’ again to create a new page, this time, name your new page ‘Blog’. On this page, you do not need to create anything. When you publish a new post, it will be displayed on the new ‘Blog’ page.

Select the ‘A static page’ option

Now you have your custom homepage and blog page, it is time to go back to our homepage settings and select the ‘A static page’ option.

Go to ‘Settings’ on your main WordPress admin menu, and select ‘Reading’ from the popup menu.

On this page select ‘A static page’ then use the drop-down menus. For your homepage, select ‘Home’ and for your posts page, select blog. Like this.

Once you have made your selections, click on the blue ‘Save Changes’ at the bottom of the page.

Add your new pages to your menu

It is important that your visitors can navigate around your site, therefore, don’t forget to add new pages or posts to your menu.

To add your new homepage and blog page to your menu, go to ‘Appearances’ in the main WordPress menu on the left. From the popup, select ‘Menus’. Like this.

To add new pages to my menu, I open ‘Pages’ under ‘Add new items’. I don’t see my new pages yet, to view them, I need to select the ‘View all’ tab.

Open the view all tab

To add them to this menu, click the box next to the required pages, then select the ‘Add to menu’ link.

If you would like to change the order of the items on your menu, you can drag and drop the items to where you want them to go. For example, I am going to move ‘Blog’ to be at the bottom.

Save your menu changes

Once you have made your changes, don’t forget to click on the blue ‘Save changes’ link. When your menu has updated, you will get the ‘Updated’ message at the top of the screen.

If you want to change the name of any menu items, you can do that by clicking on the element you want to change and type your new title. Like this.

Once you have saved your menu, it is time to check out your website homepage. Here is my tutorial website’s homepage. I didn’t create an appealing page, therefore, it is blank.

Static homepage

You can see my new menu, I have ‘Home’ on the left and ‘Blog’ on the right.

Here is my blog page.

Changing from ‘A static page’ to latest posts

If you decide you want to change your homepage from a static page to show your latest blog posts, go back to your homepage settings, and select the ‘Your latest posts’ option. Don’t forget to save your changes.

When you show your latest posts on your homepage, your ‘Blog’ page becomes redundant. I recommend you go to your menu settings and delete ‘Blog’ from your menu. To do that, click on ‘Blog’ in your menu, and select ‘Remove’. Like this.

Save your changes and ‘Blog’ stops showing on your website menu.
