How To Set A Homepage In WordPress – Beginner’s Guide

In my post, I show you how to make a homepage in WordPress, step by step. You can show your latest blog posts or create a custom page on a WordPress homepage. In my article, I show you how to do both so you can decide what is best for your website.

When I started using WordPress, I found it frustrating trying to figure out the settings in my WordPress dashboard. This post helps you with your homepage.

Let’s get started.

How To Set A Homepage In WordPress

There are two settings you can have for your homepage. The first setting is to show your latest blog posts. The second is to display a custom-made homepage.

The correct setting depends on the type of website you have. If you have a blog-type website that publishes regular posts, showing your latest blog posts on your homepage is the best setting.

Here is my website homepage. I have it set to show my latest blog posts.

If you have a business website, I recommend having a custom homepage that highlights your company’s qualities. You will also want to have Call To Actions that help customers interact with you.

Here is a demo page of a construction business website homepage. There is a get a quote form to encourage customers to contact the company.

This business website page also has sections for current projects, services, client reviews, and another contact form. You could showcase a lot about your business from your homepage.

How To Show Latest Blog Posts

To show your latest posts on your homepage, hover your mouse over Settings on your admin menu, and select Reading from the popup.

Navigate to WordPress homepage settings

You set your WordPress homepage here. At the top, there are two options, one for your latest posts and one for a static page. A static page is a custom page.

Latest posts setting

Select the Your latest posts option, decide how many posts you would like displayed on the homepage, and click Summary. A summary shows a few lines of your blog post rather than all the text.

Once you have made your selections, click on Save Changes.

How To Show A Custom-Made Homepage

Select the A Static Page option from the Reading settings page.

A static page

When you select a static page as your homepage, you have to choose a page from the drop-down menu.

If you haven’t created a homepage yet, don’t worry, I will show you how to do that next.

As well as assigning a homepage, you also need to select a page for your blog posts.

How To Create A Custom Homepage

Click on the + New link and select Page to create a custom homepage.

Create a new page

First, give the page a title. You can call it home or the name of your business.

Create a homepage in WordPress

You can use the blocks in the WordPress editor to create your homepage.

Once completed, select publish.

Publish homepage

I recommend finding a theme that is purpose-built for your type of business.

You can also go for a multipurpose theme like Astra (*Paid Link), which offers pre-built websites for businesses.

For example, the construction business homepage I showed you earlier in my post is from the Construction company theme. This theme has sections that allow a construction company to highlight its star qualities.

When you assign a page on your WordPress site to be your homepage, you also need to choose a page to list your latest blog posts.

Next, make a page, name it Blog, then publish the page. You do not have to add content to this page.

Now you have pages you can assign as your homepage and blog page. Let’s return to Reading to change those settings.

In the drop-down menu for a static page, select Home. Or select the title you gave to the page you created.

Select 'home' from the drop-down menu

In the drop-down menu, select Blog.

Select 'Blog' from the drop-down menu

Once you have selected your homepage and blog page, click Save Changes.

To create a menu, hover your mouse over Appearance and select Menus from the popup.

Select menus

On the next page, we can create a menu. First, give your new menu a name and click on Create Menu.

Create menu

After completing your menu, select Primary Menu from the settings.

Primary menu

To add pages and posts, select Add to menu. I will add Home and Blog from the list.

Select your pages and add to menu

My new menu now looks like this.

New menu

Any posts you publish will automatically appear under Blog. In addition, you can create About, Contact Us, and Terms And Conditions pages to add to this menu.

Select Save Menu once your menu is complete.

Here is my homepage. You can see my new menu on the top right.

How To Edit A Homepage

To edit your homepage, use the customizer. Hover your mouse over Appearance in the main menu, and select Customize from the popup.

Customize your homepage

Each theme has different customizing options. Make your changes from the options on the left. All your changes update on the preview on the right. Once finished making your changes, click on Publish to make your customizations live on your site.

Edit your homepage in WordPress

Now you can set, create, and edit a homepage in WordPress.

For your homepage, you have two options. You can display published blog posts or set a page to be your homepage.

Which option you go for depends on what type of site you have. If you have a standard blog, I recommend the blog post option.

Your visitors are coming to your site to read your excellent content. Listing your latest content on your homepage will work for your audience.

If you have a business and want a website to help you generate leads and find new customers, then a custom-built homepage works best.

Your homepage will be like the window of your business, so list all your best qualities in a user-friendly format. Don’t forget to add calls to action. Calls to action make it easier for your potential customers to contact you.
